On Sept. 30, MDSPE hosted a virtual discussion with a local expert panel to discuss the future of building recertification and professional liability among engineers. In light of the sudden collapse of the Champlain Towers South building in Surfside, FL on June 24,many questions have emerged about how a massive 12-story concrete structure could fall to the ground. Federal authorities have not yet concluded the investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. However, many experts and engineers believe prolonged structural damage, delayed repairs and environmental issues for more than four decades could have contributed to the building’s deterioration.

King, LLC.The panel discussed specifically how the collapse of the Surfside Towers affect policies Maryland?Delegate Holmes has seen a tremendous amount of interest in getting legislation on the books to prevent the situation that happened in Florida and assumes that some type of legislation will be put forward. He is hopeful that legislators and the engineering community can put their heads together and decide what is best for the citizens of Maryland, a solution that is very safety-minded and cost effective as well
